Happy Labor Day in Song The movements of days gone by seem to have been a lot more musical than today?s: One of the greatest things about studying historical occasions such as the labor movement is the opportunity to learn and sing the songs associated with them. I learned labor songs from my mom, who sang me Woody Guthrie's ?Union Maid? to calm me down when I was a crying baby, and I'm proud to say that I've known the lyrics to ?Solidarity Forever? since I was about six. Riding on the City of New Orleans Riding on the City of New Orleans I'm on the train, St. Paul-bound by way of Chicago. Had a delicious lunch on board, just after we left New Orleans. So far, I highly recommend rail travel, but ask me again in 24 hours. Listening to Paul Robeson sing John Henry as I type this on my iPhone. Played Arlo Guthrie's City of New Orleans on the way out of town, of course. New Orleans is starting to evacuate. This is actually the last train north before the Feds take over the rails tomorrow.
