Water of Love Toronto, Dire Straits entered my consciousness in the late 70's when, out of nowhere, Sultans of Swing hit as number one song on the top 40, and stayed there for a while. The gruff vocal, the taut guitar- this was something different, something new- rife with an essential quality that the late 70's pop I was listening to lacked (you'll have to forgive me, I was 12). I was hooked. I think my parents got me the first album, at my request, that Christmas. From that point forward, I can't remember when.
